Why use an eSIM in Japan?
Japan is one of the world's most connected countries, with fast LTE coverage in major cities and even mountainous rural areas. You'll rely on data for train maps, Google Translate, restaurant reservations, and navigating the world's most complex transit networks. Your home carrier's roaming rates can make all of that expensive - a Japan eSIM solves it.

Common questions about Japan eSIM
Everything you need to know before you fly. More answers at our full FAQ page.
What is an eSIM and how does it work?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you scan a QR code in your phone's Settings. Your Japan data plan activates in minutes - no store visit, no mail delivery, no SIM tray needed.
Will my phone work with an eSIM in Japan?
Most modern iPhones (XS/XR 2018 and newer) and many Android phones (Google Pixel 3+, Samsung Galaxy S20+) support eSIM. Your phone must also be carrier-unlocked. Check on iPhone: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. Not sure? Ask support before purchasing.
Does my phone need to be unlocked?
Yes. Your device must be carrier-unlocked to use an international eSIM. Most phones purchased outright are already unlocked. Contact your carrier if you're unsure, or check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock on iPhone.
When does my Japan plan start - on install or on arrival?
You can install (scan the QR code) at home before departure - we recommend it. Your data validity period typically starts from first use in Japan, not from installation. Set it up at home over Wi-Fi and your allowance stays untouched until you land.
Can I keep using my regular phone number in Japan?
Yes. ApexLinx eSIM plans are data only. Your primary SIM stays in your phone and your home number remains active. You can still receive calls and texts while using ApexLinx for data (maps, translation, train apps, etc.).
Will Google Translate's camera mode work with this eSIM?
Yes. Google Translate's live camera translation works over your eSIM data connection. You can point your camera at menus, signs, or labels and get real-time translations - extremely useful in Japan where menus and signs are often in Japanese only.
What happens when I run out of data?
Your data connection will pause when your allowance is used. There are no automatic charges or surprise overage fees. You can purchase an additional plan or use Wi-Fi (Japan has excellent Wi-Fi in most hotels, train stations, and convenience stores).
Does the Japan eSIM include a local phone number?
No. ApexLinx Japan eSIM plans are data-only. They do not include a Japanese phone number. You keep your home number for calls and texts. For local calls, apps like LINE (popular in Japan), WhatsApp, or FaceTime work over data.
